State Street Global Advisors has launched the State Street Gold Fund, an innovative unlisted managed fund catering to the Australian market. This new fund aims to mirror the performance of the spot gold price (LBMA Gold Price PM in Australian dollars) by investing in securities backed by physical gold bullion securely stored in vaults across London, New York, and Zurich. Notably, it boasts the lowest management costs among gold funds in Australia, set at just 0.14% per annum.

The decision to introduce the State Street Gold Fund comes amidst increasing demand from investors seeking exposure to gold. ANZ Private Bank, overseeing assets exceeding AU$9 billion, will kickstart the fund by seeding it as part of its revised strategic asset allocation, which now includes an initial allocation to gold.

State Street Launches Low-Cost Gold Fund

Robin Tsui, State Street Global Advisors Asia Pacific Gold Strategist, highlighted gold’s potential role as an inflation hedge, emphasizing its valuation influenced by intricate global macroeconomic factors such as central bank policies, interest rates, and mining production.

Lakshman Anantakrishnan, Chief Investment Officer of ANZ Private Bank, explained the rationale behind incorporating gold into their portfolios. He noted that while factors like rising real yields and a strong US dollar traditionally pose challenges for gold, increasing safe-haven demand and diversification efforts by governments and central banks bolster its appeal. Gold’s historically low or negative correlation with other asset classes adds value during periods of market uncertainty.

The State Street Gold Fund is open to institutional investors, advised investors, and intermediaries like financial advisors and platforms. Its launch represents a strategic move by State Street Global Advisors to meet evolving investor preferences for reliable, low-cost investment vehicles amidst a backdrop of economic uncertainty and evolving market dynamics. This initiative underscores State Street Global Advisors’ commitment to providing innovative solutions that address investor needs while navigating the complexities of the global financial landscape.
