Questrade launches Custom Indexing, a new investment solution that allows Canadian investors to create fully personalized index portfolios without paying management fees. The online brokerage introduced the feature to give investors greater control over their investments while maintaining the benefits of diversified index investing. Custom Indexing combines the simplicity of passive investing with the flexibility of active portfolio customization.

Through the platform, investors can select from a range of broad-market index templates and then modify them according to their individual goals, values, and market outlook. They can add or remove companies, adjust portfolio weightings, and focus on investment themes that align with their strategies. Meanwhile, automated tools manage ongoing portfolio maintenance and rebalancing. “Today’s investors want to move beyond the one-size-fits-all portfolio and have their investments reflect what they actually believe,” said Hwan Kim, Chief Product Officer at Questrade.

“Custom Indexing puts that power directly into Canadians’ hands. Whether they want to exclude specific companies or lean into an emerging theme, they can now build a tailored strategy and manage it effortlessly over time without giving up the diversification of an index, or paying a management fee for the privilege.” The platform supports up to 600 securities within a single custom index. Investors can currently choose from more than 10,000 U.S.-listed stocks and exchange-traded funds, while Questrade plans to add Canadian securities in the future.

In addition, investors can build these portfolios in both registered and non-registered accounts, including TFSAs and RRSPs, which provides greater flexibility for tax-efficient investing. Furthermore, Questrade has partnered with several well-known voices in Canada’s online investing community to offer a curated library of investment models. Contributors include Braden Dennis, Simon Belanger, Dan Kent of Canadian Investor Podcast and Fiscal.AI, Tal Schwartz of North Exit Ventures, and finance creators Lina Wu, Zac Hartley, Adrian Bar, Shay Huang, and Joyee Yang.

“At Questrade, innovation means finding new ways to shift the advantage to Canadian investors,” said Rob Galaski, President of Questrade Financial Group. “Custom Indexing is a genuine market first, one that challenges the industry’s assumptions and gives Canadians a powerful tool they’ve simply never had access to before.”
